Application & Fees

Application

The ASM requires applications from all prospective participants. Once accepted into the program, participants will be given approximately 2 weeks to register for the program. Once registered, participants will receive the pre-institute assignments that begin the yearlong residency.

Eligibility

The Residency is directed to STEM faculty who teach undergraduate courses at community colleges, 4-year colleges, and research universities and who want to connect genomics and bioinformatics concepts in the classroom to real-world research projects in the lab components of courses.

Participation in the Residency is by application. Applicants must be currently teaching full time at an institution of higher education.

The Functional Genomics Residency encourages applications from teams of three to five faculty members from one institution on the same campus, but from diverse disciplines (e.g., math, computer science, biology, genetics, biochemistry, microbiology, etc.). More information about submitting a team application is below.

Selection Criteria

Applications are required for participating in the Residency. Individuals will be selected based upon evidence of the following:

  • Personal commitment to improve undergraduate STEM education
  • Personal and institutional commitment to advance undergraduate research and interdisciplinary training
  • Institutional commitment to the future development of research projects within the lab components of courses

For those submitting team applications, preference is given to:

  • Teams from one institution
  • Faculty from community colleges or minority-serving institutions
  • Faculty from underrepresented groups in science
  • Faculty in early- or mid-career tracks (e.g., 5 to 15 years of full-time teaching)

Efforts will be made to select a cohort that represents (i) diversity in the life sciences, (ii) diversity by institutional type, (iii) ethnic and racial diversity, and (iv) geographical diversity. Special consideration will be given to institutions serving significant numbers of students that are traditionally underrepresented in the sciences.

Once applicants have been accepted and have confirmed their participation in the Residency, they will be required to pay registration fees that take into account housing, meals, and supplies.  Applicants will have to pay for their own travel to the institute at Hiram College (outside of Cleveland, OH).

Application Guidelines

DEADLINE: Midnight, PST, February 15, 2012

An application packet is considered complete when requirements 1 - 5 below have been submitted. Filling out this online application is considered step 1 in the process.

     1. Functional Genomics Residency Individual and Institutional Application Form*

Materials for requirements 2 - 5 should be submitted electronically as attached documents to facultyprograms@asmusa.org with the following subject line: "ASM/JGI Functional Genomics Residency - [insert applicant name here]".

    2. Curriculum vitae, limited to two pages and containing information relevant to the   program

    3. Statement confirming applicant's availability to participate in the yearlong residency:

    - ASM/JGI Functional Genomics Institute, June 24-28, 2012, Hiram College, Hiram, OH

    - Pre- and post-Institute readings and assignments
    - Functional Genomics Scholars listserv community
    - Five-year tracking of your professional development by ASM
    - Attend and present project at the ASM Conference for Undergraduate Educators held annually within two years of completing the institute
-Attend and present project at a national professional society meeting within two years of completing the institute
-Submit a curriculum resource to The Journal of Microbiology & Biology Education within two years of completing the institute

    4. Proposal with applicant name and institution in header. Limit responses to five total double-spaced, numbered pages:

    - Description of teaching responsibilities in the previous three years, including course titles and levels and number and types of students (biology majors, microbiology majors, nursing/allied health, biotechnology, nonscience majors, etc.) enrolled
-List of professional development activities in the previous three years. Describe the goal, length, and nature of these activities
-Description of your professional goals for attending the Institute. Be sure to describe any future courses and research projects that may benefit from the inclusion of functional genomics. Describe how training will benefit undergraduate students and be incorporated at the institution
-Description of outreach activities in the previous three years, including the number and types of people reached

    5. A letter of support from an institutional administrator advocating applicant's participation in the program and detailing infrastructure and institutional support available to applicant to incorporate functional genomics  into the curriculum. The letter should describe plans to expand the applicant's work across the undergraduate curriculum in order to encourage interdisciplinary training on campus and regionally or nationally.

Please note: The Residency is directed to STEM faculty who teach undergraduate courses at community colleges, 4-year colleges, and research universities and who want to connect genomics and bioinformatics concepts in the classroom to real-world research projects in the lab components of courses.

*Please note that in the institutional information section of the form, you will be asked to include the Carnegie classification for your institute as well as demographic information about the student population. It is worthwhile to review the form before you start entering the required information. You may look up the Carnegie Classification for your Institute here: http://classifications.carnegiefoundation.org/lookup_listings/institution.php?key=782. Other statistics may usually be obtained from the Admissions office at your institution.

Team Applications

Applying as a team requires individual applications from each team member. However, team applications must adhere to the team guidelines and practices as outlined below. Please note that additional criteria, such as synergy and collaboration, will be reviewed for team applications. If accepted into the Residency, each team member must participate in all components of the yearlong program (e.g., pre- and post-institute assignments, research project, participation/presentations during the Capstone experience, and follow-up surveys).

Research suggests that team applications are effective if the teams are carefully formed. In higher education reform efforts, it is best to construct diverse teams with both junior and senior faculty members rather than all junior or all senior faculty. The Residency reserves the right to accept entire or partial teams into the Program. If you have additional questions, please contact facultyprograms@asmusa.org.

Team Application Guidelines

Individual Application Requirements:

Each team member must indicate on the Residency Application Form that they are part of a team and list their team members. Individuals need to submit:

1. Residency Individual Application Form
2. Residency Institutional Form
3. Curriculum vitae
4. Statement of participation
5. Five page essay describing teaching responsibilities, professional development activities, professional goals, and description of outreach activities.

Team Application Requirements:

1. Letter of support - If all members of the team are from the same institution and work in the same department, they may submit a joint letter of support. If teams are interdisciplinary, each applicant should submit a letter of support advocating the applicant’s participation and describing institutional/departmental support as described in the application requirements.

2. Required Additional Team Essay - Teams must submit an additional 1 page essay which outlines each team member’s role on the team. Copies of the essay should be attached to each individual application. The names of all team members should be listed on the essay page.

Submitting the Application

All application materials must be submitted electronically as attached documents to facultyprograms@asmusa.org with the following subject line: ASM/JGI Functional Genomics Residency [insert applicant name here].

Questions about the application process should be directed to ASM Education Programs and Resources at facultyprograms@asmusa.org

Fees - Residency Registration

The registration fee for the on-site training and yearlong residency, excluding the capstone experience, is $629 for ASM members and $829 for nonmembers. If you are not a member of ASM, we encourage you to join prior to applying for the Functional Genomics Residency in order to receive discounted registration.

Team registration fees for multiple faculty members from one institution at the same location (e.g., same campus in a multi-campus arrangement) are:

• 1st member – $629 and $829 (member and nonmember rates, respectively)
• 2nd and 3rd members – $579
• 4th and 5th members – $529

The fee includes course materials and most lunches and dinners, plus follow-up networking. Participants must make their own transportation arrangements to Hiram, Ohio. Housing in a residence hall on the Hiram campus is included.

Budgeting for the Capstone Experience

Please plan to budget between $1,800 and $2,000 (e.g., registration, lodging, and airfare) for the capstone experience at the ASM Conference for Undergraduate Educators (www.asmcue.org).  Team applications may designate a single representative to participate in the capstone experience.
